REMINDER: Snow Removal Ordinance & Requirements

With the potential for snow/rain/ice - all homeowners, residents, and business owners are being reminded of the following snow and ice regulations, requirements, and safety measures:

Street parking:

It is the purpose and intent of this section, in the interests of public safety and the general welfare of the Township, to allow plowing and/or removal of snow from the streets of the Township, from curb to curb, if reasonably possible under the circumstances and if the necessary equipment and personnel are available.


Parking of any vehicle on any portion of a public street is prohibited whenever snow is falling and the accumulation is such that it covers the public streets in the Township and plowing is required, except in those locations set forth as follows:

Alma Terrace. North side, Chestnut Street to Elm Avenue.

Amsterdam Avenue. Both sides, Teaneck Road to 150 feet west thereof.

Ayers Court. Both sides.

Beech Street. East side, from the northeasterly curbline of Fort Lee Road to a point 140 feet north thereof.

Bergen Avenue. Both sides, Maple Street to 100 feet south of Blauvelt Street.

Beverly Road. Both sides, Elm Avenue to River Road.

East Cedar Lane. South side, from Azalea Court to entrance of Overpeck County Golf Course.

Elm Avenue. Both sides, Alma Terrace to North Street.

Hillside Avenue. North side, starting from a point 55 feet east of the extended easterly curb line of Woodbine Street and running easterly therefrom for a distance of 50 feet.

Hill Street. West side.

Larch Avenue. East side, from Hillcrest Street to North Street.

Linden Avenue. Both sides, from Alma Terrace to North Street.

Linden Avenue. West side, from Kipp Street to North Street.

Lozier Place. Both sides.

Minell Place. North side, Teaneck Road to Richard Court.

Parkview Drive. East side.

Pembroke Street. West side, from 186 feet south of Northumberland Road to its end.

South Strand. East side, from a point approximately 40 feet north of the extended northerly curbline of Northumberland Road, extending 95 feet north therefrom.

State Street. Both sides, Teaneck Road to Terrace Circle.

Sterling Place. North side, from Red Road to Prince Street.

Terhune Street. Both sides, Chestnut Street to Linden Avenue.

Vandelinda Avenue. Both sides, from Palisade Avenue west to its end.

Vandelinda Avenue. North side, from Palisade Avenue to 322 feet east thereof.

Washington Place. North side, Teaneck Road to Crescent Avenue.

NOTE: All existing parking restrictions for the above locations remain in effect during the period of snow emergency.


Said parking prohibition shall remain in effect after the snow has ceased and until the streets in the Township have been plowed sufficiently and to the extent that parking on them will not interfere with the normal flow of traffic and the snow removal process.


As used in this section, the term "snow" shall mean any precipitation depositing any accumulation on the public streets of the Township requiring plowing, including without limitation, snow, sleet, hail or ice.


Regulatory and warning signs in accordance with N.J.S.A. 39:4-198 shall be erected and maintained at all street entrances for motor vehicles to the Township. Signs for exempt streets shall be posted as required.


Any unoccupied vehicle parked or standing in violation of this section shall be deemed a nuisance and a menace to the safe and proper regulation of traffic, and any police officer may issue a summons and provide for the removal of such vehicle. The owner of such vehicle shall pay the prevailing cost of theremoval and storage which may result from such removal before regaining possession of such vehicle.


Handicapped parking spaces shall be exempt from the provisions of this section.

(h) All hourly limits and meter fees in municipal parking lots in the Township shall be waived for a period commencing six hours before a snowfall is predicted until 24 hours after snow has ceased to fall.

This is a list of locations exempt from the snow parking restrictions


* Commercial properties have (12) hours to remove such after the cessation of snowfall

* Residential properties have (24) hours to remove such after the cessation of snowfall

* Corner properties with sidewalk cut-out and/or passage must be sufficiently cleared

* DO NOT throw, shovel or place snow into the public street

* If there is a fire hydrant at the front of the property, it must be cleared and made visible


* Have more than (1) sturdy snow shovel on hand

* Snow blowers are checked, operable, maintained (oil and gas)

* Sufficient snow salt

* Snow removal & plowing arrangement made

* Wear snow shoes, proper gloves and face/head protection while shoveling


Residents, property owners and managers are being reminded that snow and ice must be removed from public sidewalks in a timely fashion.  Commercial properties must remove such within (12) hours after the cessation of the snowfall.  Residential properties have up to (24) after the cessation of the snowfall to remove snow and ice.  In addition, walkways to the entrances of the properties should be cleared of snow and ice in a timely fashion to allow emergency personnel and mail delivery carriers clear and safe access to the premises.   Also, do not shovel snow into the street, as this slows the efforts by the Department of Public Works to make our streets clear and safe. See below for the full snow removal ordinance, Township of Teaneck Section 32-6.

Sec. 32-6.  Snow, ice, weeds, etc., on sidewalks -- Duty of owners and tenants to remove. EN 

(a) The owners or tenants of land abutting or bordering on the sidewalks of the following public streets, avenues or highways    within the Township of Teaneck shall remove all ice and snow from the sidewalks in front of such lands within 12 hours after cessation of the fall thereon:

                 Cedar Lane. Between Broad Street and Anderson Street Bridge.             

                 Palisade Avenue. Between Court Street and the northerly curbline of the Plaza (east/west).    

                 Queen Anne Road. Between Fort Lee Road and Highwood Street.         

                 Teaneck Road. Between Fycke Lane and Tryon Avenue.              

                 The Plaza (east/west). Between the Plaza (north/south) and Palisade Avenue.                

                 The Plaza (north/south). Between Court Street and State Street.           

                 W. Englewood Avenue. Between the Plaza (north/south) and Palisade Avenue.             

(b) The owners or tenants of land abutting or bordering on the sidewalks of other public streets, avenues or highways, except as specifically provided for, within the Township of Teaneck shall remove ice and snow from the sidewalks in front of such land within 24 hours after cessation of the fall thereon. 

(c) The owners or tenants of land abutting or bordering upon the sidewalks of public streets, avenues and highways within the township shall remove all grass, weeds, bushes, brush, undergrowth and other impediments from the sidewalks in front of such land within three days after notice to remove the same. 

(d) Fire hydrant clearance. No person shall maintain within three feet of a fire hydrant, flowers, hedges or trees. All persons owning property contiguous to a fire hydrant shall remove all snow and ice within an area of three feet of such fire hydrant. 

(e) It shall be the responsibility of the owner or tenant of property at street corners and mid-block where crosswalks exist, when removing snow and ice from the sidewalks, to clear a path through the snow and ice from the sidewalk at corners and mid-block crosswalks to the plowed section of the street to allow pedestrians access from the sidewalk to the plowed portion of the street.
