A message from Mayor Mark J. Schwartz, the Teaneck Township Council, Township Manager Jaclyn M. Hashmat and Teaneck Police Chief Andrew R. McGurr

Teaneck Residents,

This past Saturday, January 24, 2026, United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents were in the Township of Teaneck. This was not the first time they have been in town and may not be the last. The Teaneck Police Department has, and continues to, abide by the NJ Office of the Attorney General Directive No. 2018-6 v2.2, Immigrant Trust Directive, when dealing with ICE or members of immigrant communities.

With limited exceptions, the following are key provisions of the directive for New Jersey’s police officers:

o Cannot stop, question, arrest, search, or detain any individual based solely on actual or suspected immigration status.

o Cannot ask the immigration status of any individual, unless doing so is necessary to the ongoing investigation of a serious offense and relevant to the offense under investigation.

o Cannot participate in ICE’s civil immigration enforcement operations.

o Cannot provide ICE with access to state or local law enforcement resources, including equipment, office space, databases, or property.

The Immigrant Trust Directive was designed to strengthen trust between New Jersey’s law enforcement officers and the state’s diverse immigrant communities, thereby ensuring that victims and witnesses feel safe reporting crimes. The Teaneck Police Department is committed to following this directive and remaining compliant with its various provisions.
