Assistant Director of Public Works

Full Time Public Works

Teaneck Township is seeking a dedicated and experienced professional to serve as Assistant Director of Public Works. This leadership position requires strong supervisory skills, excellent communication abilities, and a commitment to maintaining the township's infrastructure and public facilities to the highest standards.

Key Responsibilities
Contractor Management & Oversight
  • Supervise and communicate with outside contractors
  • Coordinate cleaning and janitorial services for township facilities
  • Ensure outside contractors are fulling contractual agreements
Personnel & Administrative Management
  •  Enforce and maintain accurate time and attendance records
  •  Manage weekend staffing at the Recycling Depot to ensure adequate coverage
  •  Address staffing shortages and coordinate employee coverage as needed
  •  Enforce workplace policies in accordance with union contracts, civil service rules, and township regulations
Parks & Recreation Facilities
  • Coordinate upkeep of all park facilities
  • Supervise and oversee maintenance schedules for public spaces
  • Organize and coordinate township-wide cleanup activities
  • Manage operations at the Teaneck Community Garden
Fleet & Equipment Management
  • Manage garage operations and review maintenance activities
  • Monitor vehicle availability and ensure fleet readiness
  • Coordinate repairs and preventive maintenance schedules
Committee & Board Participation
  • Participate in Fields Advisory Board meetings
  • Serve as department liaison to community groups and advisory committees
Work Order & Service Request Management
  • Follow up on work order requests to ensure timely completion
  • Track departmental service requests and maintain accountability
  • Coordinate with other township departments on facility needs
Environmental & Recycling Programs
  • Oversee and manage the Recycling Depot operations
  • Collect and compile data for recycling tonnage reports
  • Collect and compile data for Clean Communities reports and maintain required documentation
Emergency Response
  • Be available for snow emergencies operations
  •  Maintain 24/7 phone availability for all emergencies
  •  Respond to urgent facility and infrastructure issues outside regular business hours
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum of nine (9) years of experience in municipal management
  • Certified Public Works Manager (CPWM) certification
  • Proven experience in public works, facilities management, or related field
  • Strong supervisory and leadership capabilities
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of municipal operations and public sector contracting
  • Familiarity with union contracts and civil service regulations
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously
  • Flexibility to work irregular hours, weekends, and respond to emergencies
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in New Jersey municipal government
  • Background in parks and recreation facility management
  • Knowledge of environmental and recycling program management
  • Experience with fleet management and equipment maintenance

Must possess a valid NJ Driver's License.

Salary Range: $95,000 - $130,000 annually

Fire Inspector

Fire Prevention Bureau | Part Time

The Township of Teaneck is currently seeking applicants for a Part-Time Fire Inspector in the Fire Prevention Bureau.

Under the direction of the Fire Official, the Fire Inspector (Fire Prevention Specialist) conducts fire inspections of buildings and premises to identify and eliminate fire hazards, enforce the New Jersey Uniform Fire Code, and educate the public on fire safety practices. Work includes initial and follow-up inspections, report writing, code enforcement, and collaboration with other departments and the public.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Conduct Fire Inspections

  • Enforce fire code regulations related to life hazard and non-life hazard uses

  • Verify operability of fire alarms, suppression systems, and egress pathways

  • Issue violation notices, penalty orders, and follow through on enforcement

  • Prepare inspection reports, maintain files, and document code compliance status

  • Investigate complaints of fire code violations or hazardous conditions

  • Educate property owners, tenants, and staff on fire safety and code requirements

  • Participate in fire prevention programs or community outreach as needed

  • Collaborate with the fire department, construction officials, and municipal staff

Minimum Requirements:
  • Valid New Jersey Fire Inspector Certification issued by the NJ Department of Community AffairsValid New Jersey Driver’s License

  • High school diploma or GED

  • Minimum 3 years experience

  • Ability to pass background check

  • Able to work a minimum of 10 hours a week

Preferred Qualifications and Skills:
  • Strong working knowledge of the NJ Uniform Fire Code and referenced standards

  • Experience conducting fire inspections and preparing detailed inspection reports

  • Proficiency with inspection software and municipal database systems

  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal

  • Ability to interpret building plans and identify egress, suppression, and alarm deficiencies

  • Capable of independent fieldwork and prioritizing inspection tasks

  • Skilled in public interaction, code explanation, and hazard mitigation

Physical & Environmental Requirements:
  • Climb ladders/stairs, crawl in confined spaces, and lift up to 75 lbs.

  • Work in both indoor and outdoor environments, including adverse weather conditions

  • Exposure to dust, smoke, fumes, and hazardous materials may occur

  • Clear vision, hearing, and communication required for safe performance of duties

  • Use of computers, radios, inspection equipment, and mobile reporting tools required

Benefits and Pension:
  • Salary is $30 an hour

  • This position is not eligible for Health Benefits

  • May be eligible for the Defined Contribution Retirement Program (DCRP)
