TEANECK, NJ — The Township of Teaneck announces the retirement of Police Chief Andrew R. McGurr, effective September 1, 2026, following more than 33 years of dedicated service to the Township and the Teaneck Police Department.
Chief McGurr has devoted his career to protecting and serving the Teaneck community, rising through the ranks and earning the respect of many. Throughout his tenure as Chief, he has been recognized for his steady leadership, commitment to public safety, and, perhaps most importantly, his ability to develop and prepare the next generation of leaders within the Department.
“Chief McGurr has given more than three decades of his life to the community of Teaneck, and we are incredibly grateful for his service,” said Mayor Mark Schwartz. “His leadership, professionalism, and commitment to this community even during times of unrest has left a lasting mark on the residents, community and Township employees. On behalf of the Township Council and our residents, I congratulate Chief McGurr on an extraordinary career and wish him and his family all the best in his retirement years.”
Township Manager Jaclyn M. Hashmat reflected on both Chief McGurr’s leadership and impact he has had during their time working together.
“Chief McGurr is the kind of leader who doesn’t simply lead — he prepares others to lead,” said Hashmat. “He leads with experience and confidence, but also with thoughtfulness and a genuine concern for the people around him. I am grateful for everything we have accomplished together and express my sincere gratitude for all he has done to make Teaneck a better and safer community.”
The Township is also pleased to announce that Deputy Chief Seth B. Kriegel will succeed Chief Andrew R. McGurr and assume the leadership role as Police Chief of the Teaneck Police Department upon Chief McGurr’s retirement.
Deputy Chief Kriegel has worked alongside Chief McGurr in all aspects of the daily operations of the Department. Through that experience, he has been extensively prepared for this responsibility and has demonstrated the judgment, professionalism, and leadership necessary to guide the Department forward.
“One of Chief McGurr’s greatest strengths has been his commitment to developing the people around him, and Deputy Chief Kriegel is a reflection of that,” said Hashmat. “Seth understands this Department and our community, and has been well prepared for this next step. I have tremendous confidence in his ability to lead our officers, continue the progress we have made, and build upon the strong foundation Chief McGurr leaves behind.”
The transition represents both continuity and a new chapter for the Teaneck Police Department. The Township is confident that Deputy Chief Kriegel will continue the Department’s commitment to professionalism, accountability, community partnership, and the highest standards of public safety.
The Township of Teaneck extends its sincere gratitude and congratulations to Chief Andrew R. McGurr for 33 years of distinguished service and looks forward to the continued leadership of Deputy Chief Seth B. Kriegel as Police Chief of the Teaneck Police Department.
